Grids

These are some of the grids I've seen around campus.

using technology for the purpose of story telling.

I was thinking that all the technologies from this past section( from shadows o film), from the wayang or shadow shows to modern day animation are all was to tell stories. We as humans have created different ways to express our stories of the human condition. We have an explainable desire to express how we think and feel through stories of our experiences or stories that represent a theme we see in the world. Because of this desire we have invented different medias to use such as the camera and then moving pictures by Eadweard Muybridge

and then later on animation by Disney which are all medias to express peoples art and stories. People have been using less high tech sources in order to express as well which the shadow shows in Indonesia are a prime example of because they only require paper puppets and a light which could be a flame and then a cloth or piece of paper to do the show on.  All of these are methods of story telling and it brings meaning and happiness to people's lives which is why we do it and keeping trying o perfect it, and create new and exciting ways to do it.

Today we watched a 40 minutes video of how this pattern was made and walked on by horses and then people. In my opinion it was interesting but much too long; it could have been cut much shorter and still been just as compelling. I think the artists was more concerned with the process and his journey then the final product. I personally would have enjoyed still shots from the movie then the movie in its entirety due to the fact that it got repetitive.

vaudeville and its connections to todays humor

Vaudeville  brought a  new type of entertainment to the stage. It embraced raunchy and at the time some what crude jokes and forms of amusement. This was the first time people were blatantly laughing at others expense and it lend to the somewhat raunchy humor of today. I see the connection between that humor in the three stooges and then later on shows like south park and movies like the interview. These forms of entertainment make somewhat controversial jokes and the more recent forms of entertainment are more relevant to the time we live in but are in the same vein of humor. This connection shows how entertainment has built on its self and the themes have connected throughout history.

Why Gotterdamerung

I picked Gotterdamerung due to the fantasy aspect and I thought that aspect would help it translate into a game. It also has an array of characters to pick from which broadens the possibilities for the game.

spectacle in wrestling

Wrestling is another form of spectacle that parallels to Greek drama which was the first spectacle. I find it interesting just how similar the two are. Both we re used for entertainment and used things that are bigger and better than real life to entertain people. Wrestlers put on very elaborate shows to create drama and passion and scenes that get the audience all riled up in the same fashion that Greek dramas and shows in the coliseum did. People want to watch spectacles and things with a dramatic flare because its exciting and different then their normal day to day life. When people are so enthralled in a show whether it be wrestling or a drama it becomes art because of the spectacle and how it makes them want to watch.

The following picture show how wrestling and drama uses costume and drama scenes to create spectacle.

Spectacle

We have been talking about spectacle in class and its made me think about why people look at certain things and not others. Sometimes people look at things because they are beautiful like in the Katy Perry music video wide awake, where Katy Perry is very beautiful and it is a very eye pleasing scene. Other people look at things for their strange and bizarre aspects such as the rich bitch music video and the Madame butterfly which are both somewhat strange videos but it is because they are strange and somewhat unsettling that people continue to watch them. It is the same idea behind a car crash it is a horrific scene but people cant help but watch because it is so grotesque. I think it comes down to if the scene is abnormal or something you cant see in day to day life; whether it be abnormally beautiful, or abnormally bizarre people want to look at it. This is the goal of artists to make work that is compelling and a spectacle to make people want to look and also to think about their work and create change in society.

panopticon

The Panopticon is an ingenious design that allows for so many opportunity. As of right now it is used mainly a prison design as it allows the guards to watch all of the prisons at once. It is also used  in hospitals so the nurses can see all of their patience. This design could be taken so much farther, as an educational tool, instructors could be in the middle of the classroom and students could surround him this would make it easier for the professor to project because the acoustics would be better and the students would always be facing the instructor. Over all this is an amazing design that has stood the test of time because it is so well done.

Juan Carlos Delgado

His frozen sculptures are beautiful to look at and the technique he used was multi media due to the fact that it to a Varity of different medias to create these pieces of art.  The icy chunks on the face add an interesting variety to the piece. He is using traditional sculpture medias such as bronze and metals and the adding in this new element of ice that makes his work very compelling. He is using technology to push the limits of his art, which makes him stand out as an artist.
